A Warm and Caring Community |
As disciples of Christ, we understand our call to go into the world and bring hopeand good news to those who are lonely, those who have needs and to those who are oppressed. We are called to reach out and be the “hands and feet” of Christ. We are called to be advocates for those whom society would like to make outcasts. To that end, the people of Lakeview Lutheran Church are passionate about outreach ministry. Although our outreach ministries change, depending on the needs of the community and society at large, several components are constant.
Parish Health Ministry extends the mission of Lakeview Lutheran Church. It encompasses outreach to frail and homebound members in the way of home visits with communion and prayer; to active seniors in the way of home health help, forums and gatherings; to the community-at-large who are invited to health fairs, heath education events, and screenings. The visibility of the parish nurse on Sunday mornings offering blood pressure monitoring portrays one aspect of this ministry. Another aspect of this ministry is the quarterly Red Cross blood drive held at the church.
Food Pantry For 30 years our congregation has operated an on-site food pantry. Ms. Randi Matthews, the volunteer coordinator, graciously gives of her time to assure that the pantry is stocked and managed by a large team of congregational and neighborhood volunteers. The Lakeview Food Pantry is open every Monday morning and evening and has the capacity to serve about 20 families, (80 individuals) on the days of operation. It is fully accessible on the lower level of Lakeview Lutheran Church. The Food Pantry is only able to serve those who have been referred for service through Dane County First Call for Help at 211. Individuals interested in making financial or in-kind donations to the pantry, or who may be interested in working in the pantry, should contact the church directly.
Community Thanksgiving Dinner is held every year on Thanksgiving Day. Anyone from the community is invited to participate in this turkey dinner with all the trimmings at no cost. It is served family style in our dining room beginning at noon. Carry-outs are available to those who live in the area and who are unable to come to the church. About 250 people enjoy this event each year.
CROP Walk The people of Lakeview Lutheran Church take seriously the task of reducing world hunger. Each year about 75 individuals from the congregation participate in the annual CROP walk in Madison in October. Each year members of the congregation raise around $5000 to be donated to Church World Service through this CROP walk. Money raised at this event is used to reduce hunger throughout the world, within our nation and in Dane County. A portion of all money contributed to CROP through this congregation goes directly to local food pantries.
Lutheran World Relief Quilts In October, members of the congregation donate quilts they have made throughout the year to Lutheran World Relief to be distributed to areas of need throughout the world and in our nation.
Dane County Jail Ministry is supported by our annual budget.
Lutheran Social Services is supported through our annual budget.
ELCA Disaster Relief is supported financially through special giving and through in-kind collections as various needs arise in our nation and the world each year. One hundred percent of the financial gifts given to the ELCA Disaster Relief Program are used for victims of catastrophic events.
Summer Mission Trips are planned for the high school youth of our congregation and community. These trips are taken to locations and cultures unlike our own so that youth and adult chaperones may experience the opportunity to develop new relationships through mission work such as house painting. Mission trip exposure assists all who participate to end stereotypes, to respect and grow from diversity, to consider the pluralistic society in which we live, to improve self-esteem, to learn new skills and to gain a deeper understanding of the love God has for all people.
Hurricane Relief has been a significant activity in 2006 and 2007. Our congregation sent funds and supplies to the disaster are immediately after Katrina stuck the Gulf Coast. We followed by sending four groups, totaling about 100 person weeks, to Biloxi and New Orleans to restore homes. Another trip to work with Habitat for Humanity in New Orleans will take place in November, 2007.
Habitat for Humanity is an area of outreach supporting home ownership for low income families. Our congregation supports construction projects with labor throughout the year. |
